Dmitry Pozharsky

1578–1642 · 17th century · Also known as Prince Dmitry Pozharsky

Prince Dmitry Pozharsky was a Russian nobleman and commander. During the Time of Troubles he led, with the Nizhny Novgorod merchant Kuzma Minin, the national militia that drove the Polish garrison out of Moscow in 1612, opening the way for the election of Michael Romanov as tsar. Minin and Pozharsky are commemorated by a monument on Red Square.
