Time of Troubles

1598–1613 · 16th century

The Time of Troubles was a period of political crisis, famine, civil war and foreign intervention in Russia between the end of the Rurik dynasty in 1598 and the election of Michael Romanov as tsar in 1613. Pretenders claiming to be Ivan IV's dead son Dmitry won wide support, and Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Moscow from 1610 to 1612, while Sweden seized Novgorod.
