Michael of Russia

1596–1645 · 17th century · Also known as Michael Romanov, Michael I of Russia, Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov

Michael of Russia (Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov) was the first tsar of the Romanov dynasty, elected by an assembly of the land in 1613 to end the Time of Troubles; the news reached him at the Ipatiev Monastery near Kostroma. His reign, guided at first by his father Patriarch Filaret, restored order and made peace with Sweden and Poland, and his dynasty ruled Russia until 1917.
