House of Romanov

1613–1917 · 17th century · Also known as Romanov dynasty, Romanov

The House of Romanov was the dynasty that ruled Russia from the election of Michael Romanov as tsar in 1613 until the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917. Descended from a Muscovite boyar family related to Ivan IV through his first wife Anastasia, it produced Peter the Great, and from 1762 the throne passed to its Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov branch. Nicholas II and his family were killed by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
