Ivan IV of Russia
Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible, was the first ruler of Muscovy to be crowned tsar. He conquered Kazan and Astrakhan and fought the long Livonian War in the Baltic. Muscovite pressure in that war encouraged the closer union of Poland and Lithuania that created the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and his reign is part of the foundation of the Russian Empire.
