Principality of Kabarda
Origins
Kabarda formed in the 15th century when Circassian princes, traditionally descended from the semi-legendary Inal, settled the plains along the Terek, Malka and Baksan rivers. Its princes extended their power over neighbouring Ossetians, Ingush, Balkars and Abazins. Russian and Ottoman sources speak of Kabarda as a distinct country from the 16th century.
Rule and society
Kabarda was ruled by an aristocracy of princes and nobles who held peasants and serfs, with assemblies settling major questions. Prince Temryuk Idarov allied with Ivan IV of Russia, who married his daughter Maria in 1561. Kabardians bred famous horses and set standards of etiquette admired across the region. Their forces defeated a Crimean army at Kanzhal in 1708.
Decline and legacy
Divided into Greater and Lesser Kabarda, it became a battleground between Russia and the Crimean Khanate. Russian forts from 1763 and the campaigns of General Yermolov after 1818 broke its independence, and by 1825 it was annexed to the Russian Empire.
