Terek River
The Terek is a river of the North Caucasus, about 620 kilometres long, which rises on the slopes of Mount Kazbek in Georgia, flows through the Darial Gorge and past Vladikavkaz, and enters the Caspian Sea in Dagestan. Its valley was settled by Alans, Kabardians and, from the 16th century, the Terek Cossacks, and it marked the frontier of Russian expansion into the Caucasus.
