Kazan
Kazan is a city on the Volga at its confluence with the Kazanka, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia. Founded as a Bulgar fortress, it became the capital of the Khanate of Kazan in the 15th century and was stormed by Ivan IV in 1552, a victory commemorated by St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. It remains the centre of Volga Tatar culture, and its kremlin is a World Heritage Site.
