Nicholas II

abdicated 1917 · 20th century

Nicholas II was the last emperor of the Russian Empire, who abdicated in 1917. After the 1905 revolution he issued the October Manifesto creating the State Duma but consistently undermined its authority. His personal command of the army during the First World War tied the dynasty to military failure, and he abdicated in March 1917 amid revolution in Petrograd.
