Dmitry of Uglich

1582–1591 · 16th century · Also known as Tsarevich Dmitry, Dmitry Ivanovich

Dmitry of Uglich was the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible. After his father's death he lived with his mother at Uglich, where in 1591 he died of a knife wound to the throat. An official inquiry called it an accident during an epileptic fit, but many blamed Boris Godunov. Several pretenders later claimed his name, and he was canonised in 1606.
