Cossack Hetmanate

1649 CE – 1764 CE · capital Chyhyryn

The Cossack state created by Bohdan Khmelnytsky's uprising, which governed central Ukraine under hetmans until Catherine the Great abolished it.

Origins

In 1648 Bohdan Khmelnytsky led the Zaporozhian Cossacks and peasants in a rebellion against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After victories at Zhovti Vody and Korsun, the Treaty of Zboriv in 1649 recognised a Cossack-ruled territory with its capital at Chyhyryn. In 1654, at Pereiaslav, Khmelnytsky accepted the protection of the Tsardom of Russia.

Rule and society

The Hetmanate was divided into Cossack regiments that served as both military and administrative units, led by an elected hetman and a council of senior officers. Orthodox culture flourished, with the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy as its intellectual centre. After Khmelnytsky's death, the period called the Ruin brought civil war and division along the Dnieper by the Truce of Andrusovo in 1667.

Decline and legacy

Hetman Ivan Mazepa sided with Charles XII of Sweden, and after their defeat at Poltava in 1709 Russia steadily reduced the Hetmanate's autonomy. Catherine II forced the last hetman, Kyrylo Rozumovsky, to resign in 1764, and the regimental system was abolished by 1781.
