Battle of Zhovti Vody

1648 · 17th century · Part of the Khmelnytsky Uprising

The Battle of Zhovti Vody was fought in April and May 1648 in central Ukraine, the first major battle of the Khmelnytsky Uprising. Cossacks under Bohdan Khmelnytsky, allied with Crimean Tatars under Tugay Bey, destroyed an advance force of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth led by Stefan Potocki, after registered Cossacks in Polish service went over to the rebels. A second victory at Korsun followed days later.
