Battle on the Ice

1242 · 13th century · Also known as Battle of Lake Peipus · Part of the Northern Crusades

The Battle on the Ice was fought on 5 April 1242 on frozen Lake Peipus between the forces of the Novgorod Republic under Prince Alexander Nevsky and an army of the Livonian Order and the Bishopric of Dorpat. The crusaders were defeated, which checked their expansion into Russian lands. The battle later became a central episode of Russian national memory.
