Shelon River
The Shelon is a river of north-western Russia, about 250 kilometres long, flowing north-east through the Pskov and Novgorod regions into Lake Ilmen. Its valley lay in the heart of the lands of the Novgorod Republic. On its banks in July 1471 the army of Ivan III of Moscow routed the Novgorodian militia, a defeat that ended Novgorod's independent foreign policy.
