Battle of Shelon
The Battle of Shelon was fought on 14 July 1471 on the Shelon river, west of Lake Ilmen, between the army of the Novgorod Republic and the forces of Ivan III of Moscow. The much larger but poorly led Novgorod militia was routed. The defeat forced Novgorod to accept the Treaty of Korostyn, renouncing ties with Lithuania, and opened the way to its annexation by Moscow in 1478.
