Dmitry Donskoy

1350–1389 · 14th century · Also known as Dmitry Ivanovich

Dmitry Donskoy was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1359 and of Vladimir from 1362. He built the first stone Kremlin in Moscow and made Moscow the leading Russian principality over Tver and Ryazan. His victory over the Golden Horde commander Mamai at the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, on the Don, gave him his name, though Moscow was sacked by Tokhtamysh in 1382.
