Grand Principality of Ryazan

1129 CE – 1521 CE (approx.) · capital Ryazan

A frontier principality on the Oka, first to fall to the Mongols in 1237 and the last major Russian land absorbed by Moscow.

Origins

Ryazan on the middle Oka belonged to the Chernigov dynasty and was ruled together with Murom. Around 1129 the two lands separated, and Ryazan became a principality of its own under descendants of Yaroslav Sviatoslavich, bordering the steppe and the forest lands of the Mordvins.

Rule and society

Its princes were frequently at war with Vladimir-Suzdal and later the Grand Duchy of Moscow, while facing steppe raids from the south. In December 1237 Batu's Mongols destroyed the old city and killed Prince Yuri Igorevich, an event later told in the tale of Evpaty Kolovrat. The capital moved to Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky, the modern city of Ryazan.

Decline and legacy

Oleg Ivanovich, who ruled for most of 1350 to 1402, stood up to Dmitry Donskoy and kept out of the Battle of Kulikovo. Afterwards Moscow's influence grew steadily, and in 1521 Vasily III arrested Ivan Ivanovich, the last grand prince, and annexed Ryazan.
