Battle of Shela

c. 1812 · 19th century

The Battle of Shela was fought around 1812 or 1813 on the beach at Shela on Lamu Island, off the coast of present-day Kenya. The people of Lamu defeated a combined force from Pate and the Mazrui rulers of Mombasa. Fearing revenge, Lamu then placed itself under the protection of the Omani sultan, which helped Oman extend its control over the Swahili coast.
