Battle of Shayuan

537 · 6th century

The Battle of Shayuan was fought in 537 between the Eastern Wei under Gao Huan and the Western Wei under Yuwen Tai, near the Wei River in modern Shaanxi. Though heavily outnumbered, Yuwen Tai ambushed Gao Huan's army among reed marshes and routed it, capturing tens of thousands of men. The victory secured the survival of the Western Wei, forerunner of the Northern Zhou.
