Gao Huan

496–547 · 6th century

Gao Huan was a general of mixed Chinese and Xianbei culture who became the dominant figure in the Northern Wei during its collapse. After destroying the Erzhu clan in 532 he controlled the court; when Emperor Xiaowu fled west in 534, Gao Huan installed a new emperor at Ye, creating the Eastern Wei. He ruled it as regent until his death in 547, and his son Gao Yang founded the Northern Qi in 550.
