Karelia

Karelia is a region between the Gulf of Finland and the White Sea, divided today between Finland and Russia. Parts of it were held by Sweden in the seventeenth century. By the Peace of Nystad in 1721 Sweden ceded part of Karelia to Russia, part of the dissolution of the Swedish Empire.
