Catherine the Great

1729–1796 · 18th century · Also known as Catherine II

Catherine the Great, or Catherine II, was empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796. Her reign saw major territorial expansion, including gains on the Black Sea coast and Crimea from the Ottomans. She took part in the three partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which erased it from the map, and her rule is regarded as a high point of the Russian Empire's power and Enlightenment-influenced government.
