Zaporozhian Cossacks

16th–18th centuries · 16th century · Also known as Zaporozhians

The Zaporozhian Cossacks were the Cossacks of the lower Dnieper, organised from the 16th century around the fortified Zaporozhian Sich beyond the river's rapids. Under Bohdan Khmelnytsky they led the rising of 1648 against Poland-Lithuania that created the Cossack Hetmanate. Catherine the Great destroyed the Sich in 1775, and many former Zaporozhians were later resettled as the Black Sea Cossack Host in the Kuban.
