Battle of Königgrätz

1866 · 19th century · Also known as Battle of Sadowa · Part of the Austro-Prussian War

The Battle of Königgrätz, or Sadowa, was fought on 3 July 1866 near Hradec Králové in Bohemia and was the decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War. Prussian armies under Helmuth von Moltke, using railways and breech-loading needle guns, defeated the Austrian and Saxon army of Ludwig von Benedek. The victory excluded Austria from German affairs and led to Prussian domination of northern Germany.
