  1. 10 March

    Nasdaq peaks at the height of the dot-com bubble

    The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite index closed at 5,048, more than double its level a year earlier. It then fell by nearly 80 per cent by October 2002 as internet stocks collapsed.

  2. 12 August

    Russian submarine Kursk sinks in the Barents Sea

    Explosions in its torpedo compartment sent the nuclear submarine Kursk to the seabed, killing all 118 crew. Russia's slow response and refusal of early foreign help caused national anger.

  3. 2 November

    The first crew moves into the International Space Station

    Expedition 1, an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts, docked at the International Space Station. Since then the station has been continuously occupied by humans.

  4. 12 December

    The Supreme Court halts the Florida recount in Bush v. Gore

    By five votes to four, the US Supreme Court stopped the manual recount of presidential votes in Florida. The ruling left George W. Bush the winner of Florida, and of the presidency, by 537 votes.

    Treaty of Jeddah (2000)

    The Treaty of Jeddah, signed on 12 June 2000, settled the land and sea border between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, ending a dispute dating back to their war of 1934 and the Treaty of Taif.

    USS Cole bombing

    The USS Cole bombing was a suicide attack by al-Qaeda on the American destroyer USS Cole while it was refuelling in the harbour of Aden, Yemen, on 12 October 2000.

    Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement for Burundi

    The Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement for Burundi was signed in Arusha, Tanzania, on 28 August 2000, after talks mediated first by Julius Nyerere and then by Nelson Mandela.

    2000 Summer Olympics

    The 2000 Summer Olympics were held in Sydney, Australia, from 15 September to 1 October 2000, with about 10,000 athletes from 199 national Olympic committees.
