Xia–Shang–Zhou Chronology Project

1996–2000 · 20th century

The Xia–Shang–Zhou Chronology Project was a research programme sponsored by the People's Republic of China from 1996 to 2000 to establish dates for China's first three dynasties. Combining texts, astronomy, radiocarbon dating and archaeology, it dated the start of the Xia to about 2070 BCE, the Shang to about 1600 BCE and the Zhou conquest to 1046 BCE. Many scholars have criticised its methods and conclusions.
