Organisation armée secrète

1961–1962 · 20th century · Also known as Secret Army Organisation

The Organisation armée secrète (OAS) was a clandestine French far-right paramilitary group formed in early 1961 by army officers and European settlers opposed to Algerian independence. Through bombings and assassinations in Algeria and France it tried to wreck the negotiations between Charles de Gaulle and the Algerian nationalists, and after the Évian Accords of 1962 it waged a scorched-earth campaign before most settlers left. It also tried to kill de Gaulle.
