Montmartre
Montmartre is a hill in the 18th arrondissement in the north of Paris, crowned by the basilica of Sacré-Cœur. On 18 March 1871 the attempt by Adolphe Thiers's government to remove the National Guard's cannons from the hill set off the uprising of the Paris Commune, and the basilica was later built partly in expiation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was a famous artists' quarter.
