Quito
Quito is the capital of Ecuador, set in an Andean basin at about 2,850 metres just south of the equator. Centre of local chiefdoms and later the northern capital of the Inca Empire, it was refounded by the Spanish in 1534 and became the seat of the Royal Audiencia of Quito, famed for its baroque churches and the Quito School of art. Its junta of 10 August 1809 was among the first moves towards independence in Spanish America.
