Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

1486–1534 · 16th century · Also known as Sri Chaitanya

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a Bengali saint and the inspiration of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, a devotional movement centred on Krishna and Radha. Born at Nabadwip in 1486, he spread congregational chanting of Krishna's names and spent his later years at Puri, near the Jagannath temple, where the Gajapati king Prataparudra Deva became his devotee. His followers, among them the Goswamis of Vrindavan, gave the movement its theology.
