Gajapati Kingdom

1434 CE – 1541 CE · capital Cuttack

The Suryavamsi kingdom of Odisha whose Gajapati kings, devotees of Jagannath at Puri, briefly ruled from the Ganges to the Kaveri.

Origins

In 1434 Kapilendra Deva, a minister and general of the last Eastern Ganga king, seized the throne at Cuttack and founded the Suryavamsi dynasty. He took the title Gajapati, lord of elephants, and launched campaigns that pushed the kingdom's frontiers south along the eastern coast and north into Bengal.

Rule and society

Kapilendra Deva conquered coastal Andhra from the Reddi Kingdom and raided as far as the Kaveri, defeating the Bahmani Sultanate and the Vijayanagara Empire. The kings ruled as servants of Jagannath of Puri, whose temple was the centre of state ritual. Prataparudra Deva hosted the saint Chaitanya, and Odia literature flourished with Sarala Das's Mahabharata.

Decline and legacy

Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara took the southern provinces from Prataparudra, and the Golconda Sultanate pressed from the south-west. In 1541 the minister Govinda Vidyadhara killed the last Suryavamsi heirs and founded the Bhoi dynasty.
