Jan Matthys

c. 1500–1534 · 16th century · Also known as Jan Matthijs

Jan Matthys was a Dutch Anabaptist preacher, originally a baker from Haarlem, who proclaimed himself a prophet of the coming end of the world. In 1534 he led radical Anabaptists in taking over the city of Münster, which he declared the New Jerusalem, expelling those who refused rebaptism. He was killed in a sortie against the besieging army of the bishop at Easter 1534 and was succeeded by Jan of Leiden.
