Jan Palach
Jan Palach was a Czech student who set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in Prague on 16 January 1969 in protest against the public's resignation after the Warsaw Pact invasion. He died three days later, and his funeral became a mass demonstration. Commemorations in January 1989, known as Palach Week, were among the protests that preceded the Velvet Revolution.
