Franz von Waldeck

1491–1553 · 16th century · Also known as Francis of Waldeck

Franz von Waldeck was Prince-Bishop of Münster from 1532, and also of Minden and Osnabrück. When radical Anabaptists seized the city of Münster in 1534, he besieged it with help from neighbouring princes, and his forces took it in June 1535, ending the Anabaptist kingdom of Jan of Leiden. He later leaned towards Lutheranism but failed to make the bishopric Protestant.
