Act of Supremacy 1534

1534 · 16th century · Also known as Act of Supremacy

The Act of Supremacy 1534 was a law passed by the English Parliament declaring Henry VIII and his successors the Supreme Head of the Church of England. It completed the break with the papacy that followed the king's wish to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Repealed under Mary I, the royal supremacy was restored by a second Act of Supremacy under Elizabeth I in 1559.
