Hohenstaufen

1079–1268 · 11th century · Also known as Staufer, House of Hohenstaufen, Hohenstaufen dynasty

The Hohenstaufen, or Staufer, were a Swabian dynasty named after their castle on the Hohenstaufen mountain. Dukes of Swabia from 1079, they became German kings with Conrad III in 1138 and emperors with Frederick Barbarossa, Henry VI and Frederick II, who also ruled the Kingdom of Sicily. Their long conflict with the papacy ended in their ruin, and the last of the line, Conradin, was executed in 1268.
