Sicilian Vespers

1282 · 13th century · Also known as War of the Sicilian Vespers

The Sicilian Vespers was the uprising that began in Palermo at Easter 1282 against the rule of Charles I of Anjou in Sicily. The island offered its crown to Peter III of Aragon, starting a long war between Angevins and Aragonese that split the old kingdom into a mainland part ruled from Naples and an island kingdom of Sicily.
