Battle of Benevento

1266 · 13th century

The Battle of Benevento was fought on 26 February 1266 near Benevento in southern Italy between the army of Charles of Anjou and that of Manfred, King of Sicily. Manfred was killed and his army destroyed, giving Charles the Kingdom of Sicily and ending Hohenstaufen power in southern Italy. The victory strengthened the Guelph cause across Italy, and in Florence the Ghibellines lost control of the city soon afterwards.
