Weingarten, Württemberg

Weingarten is a town in Upper Swabia, in Baden-Württemberg, just north of Ravensburg; it was called Altdorf until 1865. It grew around Weingarten Abbey, the family monastery of the Welf dynasty, which kept a relic of the Holy Blood and became an imperial abbey. Its great Baroque basilica, consecrated in 1724, is one of the largest in Germany.
