Manuscript

A manuscript is a handwritten book or document. Manuscript traditions were central to learning and record-keeping in many empires, from the scholarly libraries of Timbuktu in the Songhai and Mali empires to illuminated works of the Ilkhanate and the Ottoman Empire. Surviving Aztec codices and Adal texts are also important sources for their histories.
