Francis I
Francis I was king of France from 1515 to 1547, a patron of the Renaissance and a rival of the Habsburg emperor Charles V. The voyages of Jacques Cartier to the Gulf of St Lawrence in 1534 were undertaken in his name, beginning French claims in North America that underlay the later French Empire.
