Twelve Articles

1525 · 16th century

The Twelve Articles were the demands of the peasants of Upper Swabia, drawn up at Memmingen in March 1525 during the German Peasants' War. Written by the furrier Sebastian Lotzer with the preacher Christoph Schappeler, they asked for the right to choose pastors, the abolition of serfdom, fair rents and access to woods, pastures and waters, all justified from the Bible. Widely printed, they became the programme of the revolt.
