Brandenburg-Prussia

1618–1701 · 17th century

Brandenburg-Prussia is the historians' name for the lands of the Hohenzollern electors of Brandenburg after they inherited the Duchy of Prussia in 1618. Ruled in personal union, the scattered territories were turned into a centralised state by Frederick William, the Great Elector, who gained full sovereignty over Prussia in 1657. In 1701 Elector Frederick III crowned himself King in Prussia, and the state became the Kingdom of Prussia.
