Sovereignty

Also known as territorial sovereignty

Sovereignty is supreme political authority over a territory and its people, free from external control. The modern idea of territorial sovereignty is often linked to the Peace of Westphalia, as accounts of the Holy Roman Empire note. Questions of sovereignty appear across many profiles, including those of the Ottoman Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Sokoto Caliphate, often as they faced foreign pressure.
