Imperial Abbey of Murbach

727 CE – 1789 CE (approx.) · capital Guebwiller

A wealthy Alsatian abbey whose abbots were princes of the Empire, ruling a small Vosges territory until the French Revolution swept it away.

Origins

Murbach Abbey was founded in 727 in a valley of the southern Vosges by Saint Pirmin, with the support of the Alsatian duke Eberhard of the Etichonid family. It soon became one of the richest monasteries of Alsace, with estates stretching into Swabia and Switzerland, including the town of Lucerne, which it held until 1291.

Rule and society

The abbots became princes of the Holy Roman Empire, ruling Guebwiller and the surrounding valleys. Only nobles could join the community. In 1560 Murbach was united with the Abbey of Lure. After France gained Alsace in 1648, the princely abbots kept their rights under French sovereignty. The Romanesque abbey church still stands.

Decline and legacy

The monks, wearied by the remote valley, moved to Guebwiller, and in 1764 the abbey became a secular collegiate chapter. During the French Revolution in 1789 the chapter's lands were seized and its palaces in Guebwiller looted, ending more than a thousand years of ecclesiastical lordship.
