Casale Monferrato

Casale Monferrato is a town on the Po in Piedmont, north-western Italy. It became the capital of the marquisate of Montferrat in the 15th century and remained the main seat under the Gonzaga, who built a great citadel there around 1590. Its fortress was besieged several times during the War of the Mantuan Succession (1628–1631).
