Azzone Visconti

1302–1339 · 14th century

Azzone Visconti was lord of Milan from 1329 to 1339. He bought the title of imperial vicar, rebuilt Milan's walls and public buildings, and extended Visconti rule over the neighbouring communes of Lombardy, including Bergamo, Como, Cremona, Lodi, Novara, Vercelli, Brescia and Piacenza. His conquests turned the lordship of Milan into a regional state that later became a duchy.
