Lombardy
Lombardy is a region of northern Italy centred on Milan, one of the wealthiest parts of the peninsula. It came under Austrian Habsburg rule in the eighteenth century and formed part of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia after 1815. Austria lost Lombardy in 1859 during Italian unification, one of the setbacks that preceded the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
