Guglielmo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua

1538–1587 · 16th century

Guglielmo Gonzaga (1538–1587) was Duke of Mantua from 1550 and became Duke of Montferrat when Emperor Maximilian II raised it to a duchy in 1574. Despite a hunched back he proved a careful administrator who curbed the power of the nobility of Montferrat. A keen musician and composer, he built the basilica of Santa Barbara in Mantua as the court church.
