Estado Novo (Portugal)

Also known as Estado Novo

The Estado Novo ('New State') was the authoritarian regime that ruled Portugal from 1933 to 1974, led for most of that time by António de Oliveira Salazar. It insisted on keeping the colonies of the Portuguese Empire and fought costly colonial wars in Africa, until the Carnation Revolution of 1974 overthrew it and led to decolonisation.
